Safety Tips For CNG Cars

CNG cars are very intriguing to many people as they usually will run on regular gasoline and CNG. A common questions that is asked is, “how safe is a CNG car?” We want to answer that question in this article.

CNG tanks are primarily made of an aluminum composite material which is extremely durable and much stronger than the metal used in today’s regular gas tanks. These Aluminum composite tanks can withstand dynamite, gun fire, and 70 mph collisions.

Safety valves are also included in all the CNG tanks which allow the tank to release the CNG into the air if there has been a collision to ensure maximum safety. These safety valves simply stay at the top of the tank and usually have a release tube so the gas is released outside of the vehicle instead of in the vehicle cab.

Many worry about natural gas igniting during a car fire, but this is a myth. Natural gas requires a lot more heat than regular gas to ignite. CNG has an octane rating that requires at least 1100 degrees of temperature to even ignite the gas.

Filling a CNG tank is also very safe as the compression will fill the tank to a maximum of 4000 lbs per square inch. The tanks are rated to hold with 3 times that pressure so filling is very safe. Also because of the octane rating a small spark or lighting of a cigerette will not ignite the gas.

CNG cars are very safe and are definitely much safer than your regular car. If you are in the market for a CNG car definitely look into it and rest assured that your safety will be increased!
